The contrast is too low


Low-contrast photo

Sometimes a photograph appears hazy due to the lighting conditions and imbalance between the object and its background. In other words, the contrast is low.

When the overall contrast of the photograph is low, it can be adjusted using image editing software.

In Photoshop, for example, select Adjust from the Image menu and click "Brightness/Contrast." The Brightness/Contrast dialog box will appear.

If you want to emphasize a certain color, make adjustments in the Hue/Saturation dialog box. For details, see Section 5-3, "What can be done about foggy old photographs?"
